Kadalundi is famous as a bird sanctuary, thronged by diverse species of migratory birds

Sometimes, the most naturally blessed destinations will also have many interesting tales from the past to tell. The beauty of the surroundings gets even more enriched by these historic stories. Kadalundi in Kozhikode district is one such locale – enchantingly lush and enigmatically historic. Located about 25 km away from the city of Kozhikode, Kadalundi is famous as a bird sanctuary, thronged by diverse species of migratory birds.

The earliest noted records about Kadalundi date back to the Sangam period. The place was referred to as “Thondi”. This area was once the headquarters of the Chera dynasty. During ancient periods, Kadalundi was a major port that maintained busy trade relationships with the Romans and Arabs. Later on, the region became a settlement of the Parappanad Kovilakam, who allowed the Dutch to build a fort here. The fort was named “Chaliyath Fort”. However, the fort was demolished by the Zamorins and in the course of history, the area fell under British rule.

The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary has identified about 60 species of migratory birds. The sanctuary is surrounded by hillocks and filled with mangrove forests. The Kadalundi-Vallikkunnu Community Reserve is spread across 1.5 sq. km. and is a locale blessed with rich flora and fauna.
