Rivers and river banks are always a source of great fascination for mankind. Through centuries, rivers have flown serenely, giving life to generations of civilizations all over the world. Kozhikode is a city with a rich history, and flowing right through its course is the Kallayi River. On the banks of the river nestles the amazing town of Kallayi – a centre of trade and commerce that has contributed significantly to the prosperity of Kozhikode in many ways.
The town has an old-world charm to it and was famed for its bustling timber trade in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Though many of the timber hills have shut down lately, Kallayi continues to contribute to the commercial prosperity of Kozhikode.
Kallayi is one of the smallest rivers in Kerala with a length of just 40 km. One of the main attractions in the area is the Kallayi Iron Bridge which was built by the British. Standing on top of this bridge, one can have delightful glimpses of the beautiful surroundings, as well as the stunning sight of the sunset.
