Kerala is geographically blessed with a vast coastal line. Along this line are a number of amazing beaches that add to the beauty of God’s Own Country. Kozhikode, being a coastal city, is endowed with a few splendid beaches that match with the best in the country. One of the most noted among these is Kolavi Beach, located in Payyoli. A serene and pristine beach, Kolavi is well-maintained too. This is one factor that makes it a visitor’s haven.
The golden sands and shallow waters make this beach splendidly beautiful. It borders Velliyamkallu, an island formed with uniquely shaped rocks. Kolavi is considered to be a swimmer’s paradise, thanks to the calm waves that kiss the shore gently. It is safe to take a nice little sea bath here and be lost in the fun and frolic of beach games. Kolavi hosts the endangered Olive Ridley Turtles that visit the shore during the months of November and December to lay eggs. Fishermen of the region have started a conservation centre called “Theeram” to save and preserve these very special turtles.
