Looking back into India’s history, one would be amused by several big names who made important contributions to the country. Many of these names are still remembered for their contributions to the nation’s freedom struggle. However, not much is known to the outside world about the names of great Indians who contributed significantly to the development of post-independence, modern-day India. V.K. Krishna Menon is one such towering figure, who was once believed to be the second most powerful person in the country, only next to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
India’s 5th Defence Minister, Krishna Menon was an academician and non-career diplomat par excellence. A proud son of Kerala, Krishna Menon was born in Thalassery and did much of his early studies in Kozhikode. It is in his honour that the V.K. Krishna Menon Museum & Art Gallery was established in 1975. The Museum displays several of Menon’s personal belongings and souvenirs. There are also several ivory objects d’art, mural paintings, amazing wood carvings and several modern paintings. All these make the museum & art gallery a must-visit destination on your trip to Kozhikode.
