When you go deep into the heart of a city, you will come across certain streets that define the urban centre in many ways. They might be of great historic relevance or a busy commercial street that adds life to the town, the nerve centre of all socio-cultural activities of that city and much more. For Kozhikode, that street is the S.M. Street, more popularly known as the “Mittayitheruvu”.
S.M. Street expands as Sweetmeat Street. It is a shopping locale situated right in the middle of the city of Kozhikode. It is a pedestrian zone and has a rich history that dates back to the time of the Zamorin rule. The Zamorin invited sweetmeat makers from Gujarat to set up shops outside the palace walls. Today, S.M. Street is one of the busiest streets in Kozhikode where one can shop for a variety of goods ranging from sweets to textiles and electronics to spices.
It is a centre where you can shop for authentic, famed Kozhikode Halwa and various other sweet delicacies. Many important landmarks of Kozhikode like Town Hall are located near S.M.Street.
