Art and culture speak volumes about a destination. The richer the artistic legacy is, the lusher will be the cultural landscape of a region. Across the world, many cities boast of cultural exuberance that attracts audiences from far and wide. Kozhikode too is a centre of culture and great artistic patronage. Adding to this cultural vibrance of Kozhikode is the Pookkad Kalalayam located in Chemmencherry – a centre of learning that contributed to many noted artists.
The Kalalayam commences its operations with modest beginnings and a few students. Today, it has blossomed into a big name with thousands of students learning and practising various courses. The areas of teaching at Pookkad Kalalayam include performing arts, painting, yoga, music, mural paintings and martial arts.
Two degrees are conferred after the successful completion of courses here – the “Priya” degree on completing a four-year course and the “Sree” degree on finishing higher studies. In addition to these courses that deal with various art forms, the Kalalayam also extends its area of interest to include different sections of the society by presenting dramas, forming Bala Bhavan, Ladies Forum, Youth Club, Children’s Theatre, Film Society, and Health Club.
