Temples occupy a significant position in the socio-cultural and religious spectrum of Kerala. They are places of worship, centres of culture and avenues of social recreation for the people. Kozhikode is home to a number of famous temples in God’s Own Country. One of the most important of these is the Tali Temple, located in the heart of the city near Mananchira.
According to Hindu mythology, the origins of the temple date back to the end of Dwaparayuga. It is believed that the “Lingam” (idol) inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple was installed by Sage Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lords Shiva and Krishna are worshipped here primarily, along with Narasimhamoorthy. The architecture of the temple stands out for its majesty and grandeur, giving the temple a distinctive look.
There are splendid wood carvings around the temple. The roofs are rich with intricate designs and there are amazing wall paintings. Another interesting feature is that the walls of the sanctum sanctorum are built in the shape of a chariot. The temple is famed for “Revathy Pattathanam” – a seven-day cultural festival celebrated in the Malayalam month of “Thulaam”(Mid-October- November).
