Every urban centre will have tales of a grand old market to tell; a centre of commercial activities that brings or once brought prosperity to the entire area. Kozhikode, which has a rich history of trading activities from faraway lands across the oceans too has the tale of a bazaar that was once the nerve centre of all mercantile activities of the Malabar region – the Valiyangadi. To this day, Valiyangadi reflects the grandeur of the good old times and continues to prosper with the people of the city.
Valiyangadi is one of the busiest and oldest markets in all of Kerala. Located not far away from the Kozhikode beach, the market was once along with the beach, considered to be the heart of the city. Much has changed around Kozhikode. A number of malls and new-age shopping avenues have opened up, yet Valiyangadi retains its quaint glamour despite all the developments around it.
Walking through the market that stretches over a kilometre in length, one will come across beautiful, old-fashioned buildings. On either side of the street are many shops that sell goods ranging from rice and vegetables to spices and other commodities. No trip to Kozhikode is complete without a stroll through Valiyangadi.
